GHPN-Ke is a GB/MSM-Led Organizations Network that has been operating as Gay, Bisexual men and Men who have Sex with other Men HIV Prevention Network of Kenya and was founded in 2013 as a Gay cluster under (Gay and Lesbian Coalision of Kenya) GALCK currently Galck+, with the main focus on Gay men health. The Network initially was formed for Gay member organizations under galck+. GHPN-Ke has currently adapted and Registered their name as Generation for Holistic, Partnership and Networking of Kenya ( GHPN-Ke ) a name that we wish to be identified as going forward.
This dynamic and strategic network brings together a diverse group of Gay, Bisexual, and Men who have Sex with Men (GB/MSM)-led organizations within the broader LGBTIQ+ movement in Kenya.
The network and its members work around advancing health justice, climate resilience, human rights, litigation advocacy, capacity building, improving livelihood and research for all LGBTIQ+ individuals, with a particular focus on the unique needs and experiences of GB/MSM communities.
Focus Areas:
• Health Justice: The Network advocates for equitable access to comprehensive healthcare services, including HIV prevention, treatment, and mental health support for GB/MSM individuals. Our member organization have successful implemented peer education program that has increased HIV testing rates and access to health services among GB/MSM in Kenya with at least 12 health facilities accredited by the government as level 2 facility across the country.
• Climate Resilience: Recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on marginalized communities, the Network works towards building the resilience of GB/MSM populations. Our network and member organizations, is currently implementing a project that provides livelihood training and resources to GB/MSM individuals displaced by climate disasters and also participate in environmental activities and forums.
• Human Rights: The Network champions the human rights of all LGBTIQ+ individuals, combatting discrimination, oppression and promoting legal protections. GHPN-KE network and members are at the forefront of this fight, having recently secured a landmark legal victory that enforced our freedom of association and participation among the LGBTIQ+ and gender diverse persons. This includes evidence-based advocacy and creativity such as Artivism (Use of Art as an advocacy tool).
• Litigation Advocacy: The Network supports and strengthens the capacity of member organizations to engage in strategic litigation to advance LGBTIQ+ rights. GHPN-Ke and members are at the forefront in providing legal aid and representation to GB/MSM individuals facing human rights abuses and also support witnesses, collecting evidence and monitoring human rights abuses.
• Capacity Building: The Network fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing among member organizations to enhance their capacity to deliver impactful services. GHPN-KE and members hosts training workshops, Symposiums on topics like organizational development and fundraising, empowering other organizations within the Network around fiduciary management, Family Protection Bill, Climate change etc
• Research: The Network conducts research to inform advocacy efforts and address the specific needs of GB/MSM communities. GHPN-Ke through its member organization is currently leading a groundbreaking research study on the mental health challenges faced by GB/MSM individuals living in Mombasa and Kisumu. We have also done other researches on Social Enterprises, Politics of Exclusion and Inclusion of Gender and Sexual Minorities.
