Ishmael Bahati

Ishmael is a passionate advocate and co-founder of Pema Kenya, an organization dedicated to supporting sexual and gender minorities, and the Centre for Minority Rights and Strategic Litigation (CMRSL). With a background in Psychology and Developmental Studies, he is also a certified trainer in Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Religion, bringing a unique perspective to his work. As one of Kenya’s leading LGBTQ+ activists, Ishmael played a pivotal role in presenting affidavits to the Kenya High Court, challenging the constitutionality of a section of the penal code that criminalizes consensual same-sex relationships. His efforts have been instrumental in driving policy reforms and advancing LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya.

Ishmael’s advocacy extends globally as a member of the Global Interfaith Network (GIN) Speaker Bureau. He was selected to prepare a statement for the 40th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, advocating for non-discrimination and equality for LGBTQ+ individuals, including those of faith. In 2024, he represented the UN-LGBTQ Working Group at the High-Level Political Forum in New York, further amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.

In collaboration with the African Population and Health Research Centre, Ishmael has conducted groundbreaking research on the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ communities in Kenya and the politics of social exclusion they face. His work has shed light on the challenges and resilience of these communities, informing advocacy and policy efforts.

Ishmael’s leadership spans multiple governance and advisory roles. He serves as an Executive Committee Member of the Key Population Consortium, Co-Chair of the GBMSM Network of Kenya, and as the MSM representative on KEMRI’s Community Advisory Board (CAB).

Additionally, he is a member of the Defenders Coalition’s Protection Working Group for human rights defenders and sits on the Mombasa and Shimo la Tewa Court Users Committee (CUC).

Through his unwavering commitment to equality, inclusion, and human rights, Ishmael continues to be a driving force for change, both in Kenya and on the global stage.
